Bait drills for firm hookbait preparation
A bait drill creates a pilot hole through hard or brittle hookbaits before a needle, cork insert or other compatible component is used. Drilling reduces the force placed on a fine bait needle and can help prevent boilies, pellets or prepared particles from cracking during rig construction.
Diameter matters. A narrow drill suits a fine hair or small insert, while a wider bit removes more material and can weaken the bait. Straight, sharp flutes clear debris more cleanly than a damaged or clogged tool. Handle size affects control when hands are cold or wet.

Choose diameter and drill with control
Match the bit to the bait size, density and intended insert. The finished hole should accept the component without forcing it, but it should not be so large that the bait becomes loose or breaks on the cast. Test on a spare bait before preparing the final rig.
Hold the hookbait in a stable bait tray or between fingers positioned clear of the exit point. Turn the drill with light, even pressure and keep it aligned. Withdraw it periodically to clear crumbs rather than driving compacted material deeper into the hole.
Do not use a bait drill as an awl, needle or general-purpose bit. If the tip skates, bends or needs heavy force, stop and select another diameter or bait. Check the final bait for hairline cracks, then thread it slowly and fit the appropriate stop.
Keep the bit clean, straight and covered
Brush debris from the flutes after every preparation session. Rinse only where the tool material permits, then dry it completely. Keep bait oils, salt and moisture away from the shaft during storage, and avoid maintenance products that could transfer an unwanted residue to bait.
Use a cap or rigid compartment to protect the point and nearby tackle. Replace a drill with a blunt edge, bent shaft, loose handle or corrosion. Store diameters separately and label similar tools so the correct pilot hole can be repeated accurately when rigs are rebuilt.
