Pellet pumps for controlled expander preparation
A pellet pump can help prepare compatible floating or expander pellets by removing air and encouraging water into their structure. The exact soaking time and number of pump cycles depend on the pellet, water temperature and maker's instructions. Not every pellet is designed for this process.
Chamber size should suit the quantity required without crowding the pellets. A smooth plunger, sound seals and a reliable valve are essential for creating and releasing a vacuum. A clear body can make it easier to observe bubbles, pellet expansion and the water level.

Follow pellet instructions and protect the seals
Start with a clean chamber and fresh water. Add the recommended amount of pellets, leave the required headspace and close the pump squarely. Operate the plunger with controlled strokes; forcing a jammed or misaligned mechanism can damage the seal or body.
Release pressure gradually and inspect the pellets after the specified cycle. A prepared pellet should have the texture needed for the chosen hook or band without becoming mushy. If results are inconsistent, change one variable at a time rather than repeatedly over-pumping the same batch.
Do not use a fishing pellet pump as a pressure vessel for other materials, and never exceed its stated method. Keep faces and fingers clear of moving parts and valves. Discard pellets that smell spoiled or have been stored in dirty water.
Rinse the chamber and inspect the valve
Empty the pump after the session, rinse away pellet residue and clean the valve and seal as directed. Dry components before storage and use only a seal lubricant specifically approved for the product and safe around bait.
Check the chamber for cracks, the plunger for rough movement and the seal for flattening or grit. Replace damaged parts rather than attempting a stronger vacuum. Store the pump open or uncompressed if instructed, away from hooks and heat, and prepare only the bait quantity permitted at the venue.
