Split-ring pliers use a shaped tip to separate the coils of a split ring, allowing hooks, swivels or lure eyes to be fitted and removed. Correct tip size is essential. A tip that is too large can overstretch a small ring, while a fine tip may slip or bend on heavy wire.

Match the tip to the split ring
Choose a tip that enters the ring gap without forcing the coils apart further than necessary. Open only enough space to start the hook or attachment, then rotate the ring rather than levering sideways. Stop if the ring remains gapped, twisted or loses spring tension.
Hold hooks so points face away from the hand and control free trebles before beginning. Hook guards can reduce accidental contact. Work over a tray or tackle box so small rings do not fall into the water or bank vegetation.
