Fishing disgorgers for careful hook removal
A disgorger slides along the line to the hook and helps reverse the hook point from a fish's mouth. It is especially useful with small hooks that are difficult to grip directly. Length, head diameter and slot size must suit the hook, line and target species.
Fine heads fit small coarse hooks, while larger or double-ended tools cover heavier patterns. A long stem provides reach, but the tool must remain stiff enough for controlled pressure. Bright colours help locate it quickly, and a textured handle improves grip with wet hands.

Choose the correct head and length
The line slot should accept the hooklength without pinching it, and the head must contact the hook bend or shank as intended. An oversized head may not reach a small hook; a very fine disgorger can flex or slip on a heavy pattern.
Carry more than one size when methods and hooks vary. Store the disgorger where it can be reached before landing a fish. If pike, large predators or multiple-hook lures are possible, also carry appropriate forceps and cutters rather than relying on a small coarse disgorger.
Support the fish with wet hands or on a suitable mat, keep it low and follow the line to the hook. Apply gentle pressure to reverse the point. Stop if the tool cannot engage cleanly or if continued movement would cause damage.
Clean the tool and inspect the slot
Rinse after use, remove debris from the slot and disinfect according to local biosecurity guidance. Check for rough moulding, cracks, bending or sharp edges that could damage line or tissue. Replace any damaged tool.
Keep disgorgers separate from exposed hooks and carry a spare. Follow fishery handling rules, minimise air exposure and release fish promptly once the hook is safely removed.
