Zebco Trophy Ball Lead Assortment

Fishing weights and leads for different rigs

Fishing weights control casting distance, sinking speed, presentation and how a rig behaves in still water or current. Split shot provides small, adjustable increments of weight for float fishing, light rigs and fine depth control. Select a size that balances the float or bait without making the presentation heavier than necessary.

Olivettes and plummets cover two useful functions: olivettes concentrate weight neatly on pole and float rigs, while plummets help measure depth and find the bottom before fishing. Drop-shot weights are designed to sit below the hook and keep a soft lure working at a controlled distance from the bottom.

Fishing bombs provide compact casting weight for legering, feeder-style setups and other bottom-fishing applications. Shape influences flight, stability and how readily a weight moves over the lake or riverbed. Screw-in weights add weight directly to selected soft lures or rigs, helping alter sink rate, balance and action. Lead tape allows small adjustments to the weighting of lures, floats and specialist tackle where its use is appropriate.

The current collection includes products from Preston Innovations, Fox, Westin, Savage Gear, Kinetic, Zebco and other established brands. Compare the actual shape, attachment, material and stated weight rather than choosing by brand alone.

How to choose the correct fishing weight

Start with the method and the minimum weight needed to cast, reach the required depth and keep control. Light weights allow a more delicate presentation, while heavier options can improve distance or hold position in deeper water, wind and current. More weight is not always better: an oversized lead can reduce bite indication, make a lure behave unnaturally or overload the rod.

Match the weight to the rod's casting range and the line's strength. For float fishing, distribute shot according to the presentation you want, with bulk weight for a faster drop or smaller spaced shot for a slower, more natural fall. For bottom fishing, consider whether a flat, square, pear, distance or other shape best suits the substrate, current and casting requirement. Drop-shot and screw-in weights should be matched to the lure size and depth.

Check how the weight attaches. Split shot must grip without damaging the line, clip-on or quick-change systems should close securely, and swivels or inserts should move correctly. Inspect reusable weights for sharp edges or deformation, and confirm the venue's rules and product material before use.

Build a balanced rig around the weight

Combine weights with compatible terminal tackle, suitable fishing hooks and the correct fishing line. Float anglers can compare the full range of fishing floats and then select shot or olivettes that balance the chosen pattern. Check every component together so that no single connection becomes the weak point of the rig.
