Fly care for reliable presentation
Fly-care products help restore buoyancy, remove contamination, dry waterlogged patterns or alter how a leader or fly sits in the surface film. Floatant, desiccant, cleaner and sinking treatment perform different jobs. The fly material, line or leader must be compatible with the selected product.
A dry-fly floatant can support fibres and hackle, while desiccant powder removes moisture after use. Sinking treatments reduce surface tension on suitable leaders or flies. Applying the wrong product can mat fibres, block hook eyes, change colour or damage coatings.
Browse all fishing accessories, compare materials and tools for fly tying, pair the setup with suitable fly rods and fly reels, or review the fly line range.
Choose treatment by fly and material
Identify whether the fly uses natural fibres, synthetic materials, foam, CDC or another specialist component. Some floatants are unsuitable for particular feathers or coatings. Use a small amount and work it into the intended material without covering the hook point or eye.
Dry a saturated fly before adding more floatant. Repeatedly coating a dirty fly traps moisture and debris. Use a cleaner designed for the fly line or leader rather than household detergent or solvent, which may remove the finish or leave a harmful residue.
Keep powders and liquids closed on the bank. Avoid spilling treatments into water and follow label instructions on skin contact, ventilation and disposal. A treated fly still needs correct casting, drift and depth control.
Clean, dry and store flies correctly
Rinse suitable flies after saltwater use, dry them thoroughly and inspect hooks for corrosion or damage. Remove old material from hook eyes carefully. Separate wet flies from dry storage until moisture has dispersed.
Store treatments upright and labelled, away from children and heat. Keep applicators clean and do not cross-contaminate floatant and sinking products. Dispose of used desiccant and empty containers according to local guidance. Keep a small absorbent patch and clean cloth in the fly box for quick drying. Replace powders that have clumped and liquids that have changed colour, separated or developed an unusual smell. Record which treatment was used on specialist materials.
