Fly-fishing lures and patterns by presentation
This parent collection brings together traditional flies, fly sets and selected large predator fly-style lures. The live page includes Kinetic, Westin, Select and Predox products, so check individual weight and intended tackle carefully: a compact trout fly and a heavy articulated predator lure require very different rods, lines, leaders and casting techniques.
Dry flies are designed to sit on or in the surface film, while wet flies are fished below it. Nymphs imitate subsurface aquatic life and can be presented at varied depths using line choice, leader design and added weight where permitted. The useful category depends on where fish are feeding rather than on appearance alone.
Streamers imitate baitfish, leeches or other mobile prey and are commonly retrieved. Saltwater flies use patterns and components intended for coastal species and conditions, while fly sets provide grouped selections for a venue or method. Browse the parent fishing lures range for non-fly alternatives.
Choose the fly for depth, species and tackle
Start with the target species and the insects or prey present. Size and silhouette often matter more than exact colour, although visibility and contrast help in stained water or low light. For trout, observe surface activity and turn over a few safe stones at the water's edge. For predator or saltwater patterns, consider baitfish size, current and the depth that must be reached.
Match the fly to the line and rod rating. Weighted streamers and large wind-resistant patterns need enough line mass and leader strength to turn over safely. Keep false casting to a minimum with heavy flies, open the casting loop and allow the line to straighten before changing direction. Wear eye protection and leave generous clearance from people, animals and obstacles.
Leader length, tippet diameter and retrieve speed affect presentation. A fine tippet can improve delicacy but must remain strong enough for the fish and cover. Heavier predator leaders require suitable knots and, where pike may take the fly, a bite-resistant section. Follow fishery rules on hook style, barbs, fly numbers and permitted weighting.
Build and maintain a fly-fishing setup
The fly fishing guide for beginners explains the basic rod, reel, line and leader system. Check each fly before use, sharpen or replace damaged hooks, dry waterlogged patterns and rinse saltwater flies after fishing. Store flies only when dry to reduce corrosion and protect natural or synthetic materials.
