Lead tape for fine balance adjustments

Weighted tape allows small amounts of mass to be added to a lure, float or compatible rig component. It can alter sink rate, suspension, casting balance and the angle at which a lure rests or falls. Changes should be gradual and tested in water because a small addition can affect finely balanced tackle.

Some products are self-adhesive, while others rely on wrapping or another approved fixing method. Check the material, weight per length, width, thickness and attachment instructions. Apply tape without upsetting lure action

Begin with a short measured strip and place it where the change is intended. Weight near the nose, centre or tail can affect attitude differently. Test the lure beside the bank, observe its fall and retrieve, then add or remove tape in small increments. Keep the complete lure within the rod's casting range.

Clean and dry the surface if adhesive tape requires it. Smooth the edges so they cannot catch line, weed or fingers, and avoid covering joints, hook hangers, drainage holes or moving parts. A wrap must not interfere with split rings, swivels or the hook gape.

Adhesion can weaken in cold water, saltwater or after repeated impacts. Where the manufacturer specifies an overwrap or seal, use only a compatible method that does not attack the lure finish or soft plastic. Do not rely on damaged adhesive for another cast.

Handle and dispose of weighted tape responsibly

Inspect the tape after every fish, snag or collision. Remove sections that lift, tear or slide and check that the underlying lure is undamaged. Keep offcuts contained and never leave them on the bank or in the water.

Confirm material and follow local restrictions on lead and fishing weights. Keep lead-containing tape away from children, avoid touching the face while handling it and wash hands afterwards. Store rolls in a closed, labelled container and dispose of unwanted material through an appropriate waste route.
