Spinning Rods

Spinning rods for lure fishing in Ireland

Spinning rods are designed to cast and work artificial lures with a fixed-spool reel. The current range covers finesse rods for small soft plastics and light spinners, versatile medium outfits and more powerful models for larger lures, pike, salmon or saltwater work. Brands include Westin, Savage Gear, Abu Garcia, Golden Catch, Kinetic, Select, Berkley and others.

The most important figure is the stated casting-weight range. Choose a rod whose working range covers the lures you actually use, allowing for jig heads, added weights and rig components. A rod that is overloaded may be damaged, while an excessively powerful blank can make light lures difficult to cast and feel. Our guide to choosing a fishing rod explains the main labels and ratings.

How to choose length, power and action

Shorter rods can be easier to control around vegetation, boats and restricted banks. Longer rods may improve line control and reach from open shores or broad rivers, but transport length and balance also matter. The fishing rod length guide provides a practical comparison for different techniques.

Fast-action rods bend mainly towards the tip and can provide crisp lure control, while more progressive blanks spread load farther through the rod. Power describes the force required to bend the blank; it is not the same as action. Match both to lure resistance, hook style, line strength and the size of fish expected. Check the handle length and reel-seat position so the rod balances comfortably with the intended reel. Consider the leader connection too: larger knots need guides that pass them cleanly, while repeated casting should remain comfortable through the wrist and forearm.

Compare related rod options

Browse the wider fishing rods range if the method is still undecided. Baitcasting rods suit casting reels and often appeal to anglers using jerkbaits or heavier presentations, while rod-and-reel combos simplify the first setup. For compact transport, compare telescopic spinning rods.

Before fishing, inspect guides, joints and the blank, confirm the lure falls within the stated rating and tighten the reel seat securely. Rinse suitable equipment after saltwater use and transport the rod so the tip and guides cannot be crushed.
