Fishing bait for coarse, carp, trout and predator angling

The right bait should suit the target species, venue, season and method. Coarse and carp bait includes groundbait, pellets, boilies, wafters, pastes and other hookbait or feed options for building attraction and presenting a clear food signal. Different sizes, textures and breakdown rates let anglers adapt the mix for rivers, canals, commercial fisheries and larger stillwaters.

Trout bait covers prepared baits and specialist options for stocked fisheries and other permitted bait-fishing situations. Predator anglers can browse deadbait fish for pike and other species where venue rules allow their use. Keep perishable or frozen bait stored and transported according to the product instructions, and never move natural bait between waters if the fishery prohibits it.

Attractants can add scent, flavour or colour to hookbaits, pellets and groundbait. Use them as part of a controlled approach rather than assuming more liquid will always improve the result. PVA products help deliver a compact parcel of free offerings close to the hookbait, while baiting equipment supports accurate mixing, preparation and feeding. Bait elastic secures softer or delicate baits for casting and presentation.

The current collection includes a particularly broad Sonubaits range, alongside bait and preparation products from Berkley, Preston Innovations, Matrix, Spomb, Korum and other established brands. Brand can make it easier to build a familiar system, but bait type, size, moisture, breakdown time and intended species are the more important selection factors.

How to choose and prepare fishing bait

Begin with the species and how it naturally feeds. Small particles and fine groundbait can create an active feeding area for smaller coarse fish, while larger pellets, boilies or durable hookbaits may help target carp and bigger specimens. In cold or pressured conditions, a restrained amount can be more effective than heavy feeding. In warmer water or where fish are competing confidently, a larger feed response may be appropriate.

Match the bait to the delivery method. Groundbait for a cage feeder needs a consistency that releases at the intended rate, while method-feeder mixes must mould firmly enough for casting and then break down around the hookbait. PVA bags and mesh require dry or PVA-friendly contents so they dissolve correctly. For float fishing, loose feed should be introduced accurately and in amounts that keep fish interested without quickly filling them.

Prepare bait gradually. Add water or liquid in stages, allow time for absorption and check the texture again before fishing. Sieve or riddle groundbait where a consistent mix is needed, and keep different hookbait sizes or flavours organised. Always follow the product label and the fishery's rules on permitted baits, quantities and preparation.

Match bait with the right tackle

Choose suitable fishing hooks for the bait size and target species, then select the appropriate fishing feeders or fishing floats for delivery and bite indication.
