How to choose the right fishing line

Compare both breaking strain and diameter: two lines with a similar rating may differ noticeably in thickness, stiffness and handling.
Match the line to the reel's capacity and the rod's intended range. Thin braid can cast efficiently and transmit subtle contact, but its low stretch means the rod, drag and knots must absorb sudden shocks. Monofilament offers more give and can be forgiving in general use. Fluorocarbon and specialist hooklength materials may be selected for abrasion resistance, stiffness or presentation. Also consider colour, buoyancy, memory and how the line behaves in wind or current.
Use knots recommended for the material and check them carefully before fishing. Inspect the first metres of line for abrasion, flattening or damage, especially after fishing around rocks, weed, structures or shell beds. Replace weakened sections rather than relying only on the original breaking-strain label. Store spare line away from heat, direct sunlight and contamination.
