Fishing spoons over 10g for distance and depth

Spoons over 10g provide extra casting weight and depth control for pike, salmon, larger trout and selected shore applications. The range includes Kinetic, Abu Garcia, Yarie, Zebco, DAM, Select, Westin and Savage Gear. Weight alone does not define use: body shape, thickness and curvature determine sink rate, lift and action.

A wide spoon can flutter and remain higher in the water, while a narrow, dense model often casts further and holds better in current. Inline designs thread the line or leader through the body, whereas conventional spoons use an eye and split ring. Check the product configuration, supplied hook and any rigging instructions before fishing.

Browse all fishing lures, step down to spoons from 5g to 10g, compare compact sea metal jigs, or choose spoons up to 5g for light trout and perch presentations.

Match weight to rod, depth and current

Keep the complete lure within the rod's casting range, including hook, split rings and terminal connection. A heavier spoon can overload a light rod even when it feels easy to swing. Use a controlled casting stroke and leave adequate space around people, animals and obstacles, particularly with long rods or shore winds.

Begin the retrieve at close range to see the speed at which the spoon wobbles cleanly. If it rolls continuously, slow down, change angle or select a different profile. Count down only after learning the sink rate in clear water, and maintain contact so the lure does not fall uncontrolled into rocks, weed or submerged timber.

Current and waves can make a spoon rise, stall or sweep across the flow. Adjust cast angle before adding weight. Natural metallic finishes are useful in clear water, while copper, gold, black and bright accents can improve contrast in stain or low light. The metal spoon fishing guide provides retrieve ideas.

Use suitable leaders and maintain the hardware

Choose line, leader and hook strength for the species and cover. Pike require a bite-resistant trace, while salmon fisheries may have specific restrictions on hooks, barbs, seasons and lure use. Read the salmon fishing rod guide for setup context, then confirm local regulations before fishing.

Inspect split rings, swivels and hook points after rock contact or a strong fish. Replace worn parts with equivalent strength and weight so the action remains balanced. Rinse saltwater-exposed spoons, dry them fully and store them away from lighter painted lures that could be damaged by impact.
