Fishing tools for rigs, lures and fish care

Reliable tools make it easier to build rigs, maintain tackle and deal with problems safely at the water. General fishing pliers can grip, bend and cut selected materials, while split-ring pliers are shaped to open split rings when replacing lure hooks or hardware. Use a tool that matches the component size rather than forcing a small ring or delicate fitting.

Crimping pliers apply controlled pressure when making wire, fluorocarbon or specialist traces. Match the jaw profile to the crimp and avoid crushing the material. Forceps help reach and remove hooks, especially in coarse, trout and predator fishing, while disgorgers provide a simple way to release smaller hooks from fish caught on bait.

For line and rig materials, fishing scissors provide clean cuts on monofilament, braid or bait where the blade is suitable. Side cutters are intended for tougher wire and components, but their rated capacity should not be exceeded. A hook sharpener can restore a lightly dulled point; hooks that are bent, cracked or badly corroded should be replaced.

The wider collection also covers knives and axes, chopped-worm scissors, fish measures, bait needles, drills, punches, crushers, pellet pumps, bait banders, zingers, line snips, catapults, carabiners and oil or air kits. Current brands include Kinetic, Berkley, Westin, Fox Rage, Highlander, Preston Innovations, Golden Catch, Savage Gear and others.

Choose the right tool for the job

Start with the material and task. Fine rig components require precise jaws and smooth edges, while heavy wire or large split rings need stronger tools. Check handle grip, corrosion resistance, jaw alignment, hinge movement and whether cutters are replaceable. Saltwater anglers should rinse and dry metal tools after use, then apply suitable maintenance products where the manufacturer recommends them.

Keep sharp tools closed, sheathed or stored securely. Never use fishing scissors or side cutters on materials beyond their design, and keep knives and axes away from loose tackle and children. When unhooking fish, prepare forceps, cutters and the landing or unhooking area before lifting the fish from the water. A tool is useful only if it can be reached quickly without creating another hazard.

For bait preparation, use clean tools and keep drills, needles, punches and banders organised by size. Inspect fine points for damage and cap them during transport. Catapults, pumps and other mechanical items should be checked for worn elastic, cracks or loose fittings before use.

Organise a practical tool kit

Combine the essential tools with useful fishing accessories, the correct fishing hooks and compatible terminal tackle. Store everything in suitable fishing luggage so sharp, wet and delicate items remain separated and easy to find. Dry the tool kit fully before closing the bag for storage.
