Minnows and crankbaits for controlled-depth lure fishing

Minnows and crankbaits are hard lures designed to imitate baitfish or other prey while providing repeatable action. Minnow-shaped baits often have a slender profile for twitching, sweeping or steady retrieves, while crankbaits usually use a fuller body and diving lip to create stronger wobble. The range includes Megabass, DUO, Westin, Savage Gear, Abu Garcia and Berkley.

Buoyancy changes how a lure behaves during pauses. Floating models rise, suspending lures are intended to hold close to a set depth, and sinking versions help search deeper water or cope with wind and current. Actual behaviour varies with water temperature, salinity, hooks and leader hardware, so test a new lure close to the bank before fishing it over snags.

Browse the wider fishing lures range for alternative actions. Soft lures allow varied rigging, jerkbaits emphasise directional movement and pauses, and spinners use a rotating blade for flash and vibration.

Choose running depth, size and action

Start with the depth above weed, rocks or other cover. A lure's stated running depth is a guide rather than a guarantee: line diameter, casting distance, rod position and retrieve speed all influence how deep it travels. A longer or steeper diving lip generally increases resistance, so the rod and reel must handle the pull as well as the lure's static weight.

Match profile and size to the available prey and the fish you expect, but do not assume large predators always want the largest bait. Compact crankbaits can attract perch and trout, while longer minnows can imitate sandeel, sprat or juvenile fish for coastal species. Natural finishes work well in clear conditions; contrast, flash and vibration can improve detection in coloured water or low light.

Use short twitches and pauses for an erratic minnow presentation, or a steady retrieve to let a crankbait establish its designed action. Change only one variable at a time and watch for the speed at which the lure begins to roll or lose stability. The guide to choosing sea bass lures adds coastal context.

Rig and maintain hard lures safely

Keep the complete lure within the rod's casting range and choose line and leader strength for the species, cover and hook size. Check split rings, snaps and treble hooks before use. Where pike are present, use an appropriate bite-resistant trace and carry suitable unhooking tools.

Rinse lures after saltwater use, dry them before closing the box and replace corroded or opened hardware. For a broader species comparison, read the lure guide for pike, sea bass and perch.
